Listening Labs at Brotherhood Synagogue

Background

Brotherhood Synagogue in New York City is navigating a complex and challenging landscape marked by increasing internal and external polarizations. The aftermath of October 7th and the rise of antisemitism have deepened generational and political divides within the Jewish community. Differing perspectives on how to respond to and process these challenges have led to tensions and misunderstandings, making open and empathetic dialogue increasingly difficult.

Beyond these immediate concerns, the broader societal trend of declining deep listening and meaningful engagement further compounds the issue. In an era dominated by rapid communication and polarized discourse, truly hearing and understanding one another has become a rare skill. This breakdown in effective communication has hindered the community’s ability to support its members, resolve conflicts, and work together toward common goals.

The Listening Lab Approach

To address these challenges, we partnered with Brotherhood Synagogue to host a Listening Lab, designed to foster deep listening, mutual understanding, and authentic connection within the community. Our approach provided a structured yet open space for participants to engage in active listening exercises, share personal experiences, and practice meaningful dialogue.

Key Objectives:

  • Create a safe and supportive environment for community members to express their thoughts and emotions.

  • Strengthen intergenerational and cross-political understanding through structured listening exercises.

  • Equip participants with practical tools for deep listening and empathetic engagement.

  • Rebuild a sense of unity and connection within the synagogue.

The Event

In February 2025, 50 members of Brotherhood Synagogue gathered for the Listening Lab led by Yael Shy. The session began with a brief introduction to deep listening principles and the importance of fostering understanding in divided communities. Participants were then guided through a series of facilitated exercises, including paired listening activities, group reflections, and structured dialogue prompts tailored to address the synagogue’s unique challenges.

Throughout the session, attendees had the opportunity to share their experiences, listen without interruption or judgment, and practice techniques that encourage empathy and deeper connection. The atmosphere was one of openness and curiosity, allowing individuals with differing perspectives to engage meaningfully and constructively.

Outcomes & Impact

Participants shared several key takeaways from the session:

  • "The program made me feel better. It is a reminder that we all have problems. It also reminded me not to be so judgmental."

  • "I noticed that some people seemed to feel more comfortable with the other person after sharing and others less comfortable."

  • "It is an emotional experience if you do it correctly and very worthwhile."

  • "Enhanced self-esteem by being vulnerable and appreciated."

The session provided a deeply emotional and meaningful experience for many attendees, reinforcing the power of deep listening in fostering empathy and connection. By creating a safe space for open dialogue, the Listening Lab helped participants recognize shared struggles and appreciate the value of being truly heard.

Conclusion

The Listening Lab at Brotherhood Synagogue demonstrated the power of structured listening in bridging divides and strengthening communal bonds. By providing a space for authentic dialogue and deep engagement, the session helped lay the groundwork for a more united and resilient community. Moving forward, Brotherhood Synagogue has the opportunity to integrate these practices into their ongoing efforts to foster connection and understanding among members.
